Numbers: the units come first

From 21 to 99, Dutch says the units first: eenentwintig = one-and-twenty = 21. Zevenenveertig = 47. Achtennegentig = 98.

This is the most common listening mistake: you hear vier first and write 4…, but vierendertig is 34.

Clock times: 'half' means half TO the hour

half drie = 2:30 (half an hour before three), not 3:30!

kwart over vier = 4:15, kwart voor vijf = 4:45

tien over half acht = 7:40, vijf voor half negen = 8:25

Timetables and announcements often use the 24-hour clock: veertien uur dertig = 14:30.

  • De les begint om half tien.9:30
  • De trein vertrekt om kwart voor zes.5:45

Dates

Dates use the ordinal number: de eerste mei (1 May), de derde maart (3 March), de twintigste juni (20 June).
