The rule

Dutch has two words for the: de and het. About two thirds of all nouns take de. There is no perfect rule, so learn every noun with its article.

A few rules help:

  • All plurals take de: het huis → de huizen.
  • Small words ending in -je (diminutives) take het: de tafel → het tafeltje.
  • People are usually de: de man, de vrouw, de dokter.
  • Words ending in -ing, -heid, -tie take de: de woning, de vrijheid, de politie.
  • Verbs used as nouns take het: het eten, het werken.
  • Right: het boek → de boekenthe book → the books
  • Right: de stoel → het stoeltjethe chair → the little chair
  • Right: het meisjethe girl

Een works for both

The word for a is always een, for de-words and het-words: een stoel, een huis. So when you are not sure, een is safe.

  • Right: Ik heb een huis en een auto.I have a house and a car.
