Why they matter

Many exam questions ask why something happens, or what the writer really thinks. The answer is often right after a signal word. Learn to spot them and you find answers faster.

The main groups

Cause and result: want, omdat, daardoor, daarom, dus

Contrast: maar, toch, echter, hoewel, ondanks

Adding something: ook, bovendien, daarnaast, ten eerste

Time and order: eerst, daarna, toen, ten slotte

Example: bijvoorbeeld, zoals

  • Right: De trein had vertraging. Daardoor kwam ik te laat.daardoor = as a result
  • Right: Het was koud. Toch gingen we naar het strand.toch = still, despite that

Exam tip

Be careful with contrast words. After maar or echter the writer often says what they really mean, and that is usually the answer.
