The rule
Dutch often glues two or more words together into one: de fiets + de sleutel = de fietssleutel. They are written as one word, without a space.
The last part is the main word. It decides the meaning and the article: het huis + de deur = de huisdeur (the front door), de hond + het hok = het hondenhok (a kennel).
zorgfirst part
verzekeringmain word
- Right: de zorgverzekeringthe health insurance
- Wrong: de zorg verzekering
- Right: het fietspadthe bike path (de fiets + het pad)
Linking letters
Sometimes a linking -s- or -en- goes between the parts: de stad + het huis = het stadhuis, but de arbeid + het contract = het arbeidscontract, de kip + de soep = de kippensoep. Learn these by reading: there is no simple rule.
